Expansion
This site includes all counties in each country in the UK
and Ireland for greater convenience of users. Where these
counties are maintained for GENUKI by other people, the
links to their sites have been maintained as well.
There are also lists for Australia, New Zealand, Canada
and America [USA] and the potential to set up lists for
further countries exists if we receive an indication of
need from our survey page.
Updates
Using the forms in database format saves a significant amount
of time formatting the lists and allows weekly updates as
a result. This means your postings are available much sooner
and you can quickly address any changes.
Expiry
To avoid disappointment resulting from finding an interesting
posting with a faulty email, the site removes old postings
after 24 months. You can extend your postings for a further
24 months by updating just before the expiry.
Powerful searching techniques now available
It is recommended that visitors to the site familiarise
themselves with the powerful searching tools available for
databases and especially the use of wild card searching.
Where ever you see this symbol
on a page you know that you can find assistance. When the
symbol appears against a search field it will lead to hints
on how to expand your searching techniques.
It is important that you ensure all your variant names are
posted and you should post them within the one submission.
The searchers will pick up all the variants even if your
variants have different initial letters as in... ATTWOOD
/ ATWOOD / HATWOOD. Searchers using wildcard searching will
pick up these forms as a matter of course but if you put
them all in the one posting you have a better chance of
inexperienced database users picking up all formats!
Search features are numerous..
† All searches require just two characters.
† You can use either UPPER or lower case as the search
is not case sensitive.
† The wildcard facility can assist searching in a multitude
of ways...
An initial letter and * (for example b*) will find
every name starting with the letter.
A group of letters followed by * (for example john*)
will find every names stating with the group of letters
An * followed by a letter or group of letters (such
as *donald) will find every name ending with the letters
If you are not sure of the spelling replacing letters
with an * as in sm*h which will find every version of
smith
Two * can expand the search even further as in *ton*
will locate a range of names from Barton to Stone
Three * expands the search even further as in *b*ton
will locate Barton, Boston, Thebarton, etc
Junk emails resulting from email harvesting
The increasing number of complaints about the receipt of
junk emails being received by submitters has been addressed.
As with any changes, there are positive as well as negative
outcomes.
The former presentation of this list allowed visitors to
scroll down the whole list and pick up entries of possible
interest. This has had to be sacrificed to address the growing
problem of unscrupulous commercial organisations stripping
out the emails from the pages for the purposes of generating
junk emails.
Users to the site will now have to enter the name/s they
seek into a database search field. This innovation means
that it is just that much more difficult to harvest emails
which is undertaken by organisations. Unfortunately it means
it is just that much more difficult for users to locate
names of interest unless they employ the tools available
for searching databases.
Outages
For time to time the site is closed for various reasons. If these are know beforehand
they are reported on the Closure page.
